Invent Your Own Job: It Worked for Chanel, Microsoft, and Spanx!

If the economy concerns you...a good way to stay ahead of bad news is to bring in extra income in addition to your current job. By creating your own job, you can create job security and make money to help lessen the stress of the current economic situation.

Some reasons to create your own job are:
1) You want to make some additional income every day to help make ends meet.
2) You're looking to bring in some extra cash each week...the "latte factor" to invest.
3) You have bills to pay off and the extra cash will help you do that faster.
4) You're saving to buy something special.

Some of the most successful businesses around were started by a person who had a talent or a product that other people would be willing to pay for. In many cases, these people started with a hobby they were good at.

Take, for example, Coco Chanel. She was born poor and spent several years in an orphanage after her mother died. As an adult, she worked for a tailor to make ends meet. During this time, she took up the hobby of hat design, and this was the first step to the Chanel brand that is still known worldwide today.

We call them entrepreneurs, but the title can be a little intimidating.
When we hear the word "entrepreneur", we automatically think of people like Debbie Fields (of Mrs. Fields Cookies), Donald Trump, or Oprah, and the scope of their success can be discouraging to someone who's just starting out, or even thinking about starting a business.

It's true that there is some financial risk involved in starting a new business venture, but you don't necessarily need thousands, or even hundreds of dollars to get going.

In fact, it's better to start small and grow from there. Lots of companies that are massively successful today had a small start and grew bigger as word spread and demand increased.

Maybe you feel like the product or service you have is only beneficial to you...but think again.
Sara Blakely, the inventor of Spanx initially created the product for herself in a pinch one day by cutting the feet off a pair of pantyhose. It worked for her...and for lots of customers!

If you're serious about creating your own job, take some time to determine if you're overlooking something in your life that you could bring to wide market and help lots of people.

This is first step to creating your own job.

And if you love what you're doing, it won't even seem like work. In time, if you stay consistent, you can build a steady source of income with a job that you invented for yourself.

Some things to remember when you create your own Job:

Be realistic: Depending on what you already do with your time, you may have only a few hours per week to devote to your new venture. If you only have 3 or four hours per week, it could take a little longer to work through the preliminary stages of getting things set up, publicizing your business and finding customers, etc.

If you have 10-20 extra hours a week, then you will work through the beginning stages a lot faster and be on your way to getting customers and making money sooner.

Get on the good side of the law: Now is a good time to find out what, if any type of business licenses or permits you may need to operate the type of company you're starting. Because the rules vary from place to place, visit the Small Business Administration to get your questions answered.

Keep track of how you spend your time: Get a planner. It doesn't have to be fancy--you can use a three ring binder or an empty notebook if you need to. But use it!

Write out your goals, set some time lines and stick to what you've mapped out. Keep track of anything you do related to your business, from making products, to contacting potential customers to designing business cards or advertising materials.
